get ready, get set...

Head on over to the shop + see what's in the sample sale section!

Hope you had a delicious weekend. We are soaking up the last morsels of summer, even though it already feels like autumn here!

shop sale

A small stack of shop seconds has been slowly accumulating in my closet over the past year or so.
Time to offload! Snatch 'em up next week for a steal of a deal.
Or, as they say in the Intermountain West, a still of a dill.

Unrelated: I am listening to these peeps right now instead of doing my workout.

on the work table

Yay for Friday! Anything fun going on? We are getting together with friends -- hopefully the bugs won't be too bad so we can hang out on the back porch and let the kids run wild in the yard.

My work table has been overflowing lately. I have no idea how many WIPs/UFOs I've got hanging around, and so many more wanna-makes than I could ever get to! It's the blessing and the cursing of the Internet. So many amazing people sharing so many amazing ideas!

This week, I've been working on new skirts for the shop...

Awesome mail yesterday -- an NPR postcard from Jentry (so jealous) and pretty new washi!

...and a lovely bundle of new floss in gorgeous, saturated colors for the friendship bracelet swap, thanks to the brand-new fancypants Jo Ann we just got in town, yee haw. I have been seeing color inspiration everywhere lately and think I might need to go back for more!

Have a happy weekend!

etsy favorites

Happy 4th of July, friends in the USA! We're off to stuff ourselves with BBQ, play in sprinklers, and get nicely sunburned. :)

styled skirts

3 new skirts
So I realize I totally posted these same exact skirts yesterday (duh Amanda, way to go). But I was so happy with the way the photos turned out that I wanted to post them all over again (and now they're up in the shop!). I hadn't thought of wearing a belt with these skirts until today, but I really like the way they look. Snazzy little watering can, eh? Ehhh? Which one is your favorite?

Be back soon with something new.

4.28.2011

tomorrow? (fingers crossed)

Some other things:

* Thank you for your sweet comments about my new blog! All the design comes from the uber-talented Molly via the newly launched Life Made Lovely Designs. Molly and Heather are sweet, real, and amazingly talented. Jump on 'em!

* 70 degrees yesterday. Bare feet. Grass. Running. Sunshine. Bliss.

* These mustard flats are completely killing me. Somebody please buy them so I can't. Anybody seen any cheap shoes like this?

* Onion-parmesan sourdough. Yes.

* Love you guys. Thanks for being so sweet with this bloggy move. I was really nervous about it, so thanks for being so awesome + supportive. Let's do a giveaway or something soon, mkay?

julia + courtney

Courtney had me make some skirts last year for her family. She was pregnant at the time, so for this year's family pictures, we dreamed up new skirts for her and her littlest girl. For her own skirt, she opted for a lightweight jersey waistband to match the skirt fabric -- so comfy!

new skirts for summer

The first batch of new skirts is now in the shop! I've drafted up a new pattern that's a little bit swingy-er for summertime. Each new listing is for a particular size, but can be custom made in any size you like.

Have a fun weekend, everyone! Kissy kissy!

wonderland mini

I just finished a sweet order for a sweet mama with some sweet babies. She really liked the Wonderland skirt (made from the same fabric) and wanted some pretties for her babies to match. There was just exactly enough of that fabric left to make two cute bow ties. Love!

treasured

When you visit the Etsy front page, there's always a lovely curated collection of pretties to look at. These collections come from the Etsy Treasuries, which anyone can access or create. I feel super lucky to have been in a few really pretty ones lately!

And because I hate posting things without a picture...

New York is nice, but I'd rather be here. Wedgie and all.

mm on the etsy front page!

Yahoo! The Modern Marigold made it to Etsy's front page today. Thanks to everyone who stopped by -- and if you're new around here, welcome!

winner + maternity skirts?

Congrats to Gloria, winner of the bunting giveaway! Thanks to everyone who entered -- if you still want a kit, don't forget that you can get free shipping through midnight tonight using the code HAPPYHAPPY at checkout!

I've been contemplating making maternity skirts for the shop... one of my dearest friends from back home is expecting her first baby and asked me to make one for her to wear at her baby shower.

(The waistband is folded over a little in the picture.) Skirts and pants with jersey waistbands are my favorite thing when I'm hugely pregnant (heck, even when I'm not). Nothing feels better, except maybe a late-night McFlurry.

I'm looking forward to some studio time this afternoon so I can cut some more rainbow buntings and do some dressmaking experimentation. It's a beautiful, bright Saturday in the North Country -- hope your day is the happiest!

3.22.2011

happy happy! (plus a giveaway + free shipping)

It's been an incredible year, you guys. Each sale, each comment, each encouraging word -- they all fill me with such excitement and such gratitude. If anyone reading this has ever wanted to write a blog or open an Etsy shop, do it! Both are amazing outlets for creativity and growth, and the blogger/Etsy community is so welcoming, dynamic, and inspiring. Love it.

I would be a complete fraud if I didn't give a colossal shout-out to Jane, Evelyn, and especially my sweet husband, Richard. The Modern Marigold would be no more than a daydream without their love, hard work, and support. Most of all, I thank my Heavenly Father for the gifts He gives to me & my family & for the joy that comes from sharing them; He is the true and only source behind all of this!

I'm pleased to announce that I'll be launching a new blog at the beginning of May. Little Cumulus (500th post this week, though I didn't realize it till afterwards!) has been a wonderful place to grow, but it's time to merge blog + shop. (Eee!)

And since I'm fresh out of pie, how about a giveaway instead? One lucky winner will get to pick a bunting kit from the shop (and hey, if you don't sew, I got your back)! Just leave a comment below and I'll pick a winner at random on Saturday morning. I hope you'll also enjoy this little coupon code -- free shipping for all in-stock items (custom work not included), worldwide, through midnight (EDT) Saturday.

Thanks again, guys -- friends, family, commenters, and lurkers alike -- I couldn't do this without you!

new spring buntings

Just wanted to surface from a maple + sunshine-induced haze of springtime happiness long enough to say that I'll be re-stocking DIY bunting kits in the shop all next week. I had originally planned to make them a one-time thing, but ended up changing my mind (happy shrug). Lots of loves to everyone!

frankie + jensie

Erin approached me a few weeks ago about making some skirts for her two girls, Frankie and Jensie. After hashing out a few basic preferences and details, Erin completely handed me the reins and told me to go for it (sah-weet!).

I pulled all the fabrics from my collection that Erin specifically requested, then started looking for coordinating fabrics. It's kind of a challenge when you're working with vintage linens, as the options are limited and there isn't always a perfect mate for every fabric. My favorite is this funky olive double-layered skirt. The print I used for the blue underskirt threw me for a loop when I held it up next to the olive print, and I spent hours saying to myself, "I think this works...does it work? It works, right??" I love it, though, and I'm planning to make one in my size, too!

Once I'd made the fabric pairing choices, I assigned a skirt style to each pairing (or threesome). Sometimes the number of fabrics in a group dictates the skirt style; other times it's decided by the amount of fabric I have available. Right now I'm using three skirt designs: two-tiered, three-tiered, and double-layered (with the underskirt).

If you're feeling inspired, come on in to the shop to design your own custom skirt -- for girls, and now for women, too!

I hope you love 'em, Frankie and Jensie, you cute girls!

go on, get in a scrap

((title to be said in a Lampwick-like voice))

Scrap packs! They went in about 24 hours last time around, so nab one while the gettin' is good.

custom women's skirts

Just popping in to say that custom women's skirts are here!

Have a beautiful Sabbath, friends.
