I've had this little phrase written down on a piece of paper, sitting on the kitchen counter, for the past few days. Lately I just haven't been so good at spending time
with my kids, and I hoodwink myself into thinking that spending time
near them is enough. Too often I hear the words "in a minute" or "Mommy's busy" coming out of my mouth, and that never feels quite right. So this week I'm going to try a little more "yes" and "okay." Wish me luck!

Thanks for the reminder, Amanda. In some ways, I think "near" is healthy, since it's good for them to see us modeling healthy adult behavior (cleaning, cooking, sewing, being happy in our homes). But, you're right, we have to be "with" as well and we truly love to be "with" once we do it! It's all a balance.
Amen! thanks for sharing!
I love that saying and often find myself thinking like you. I think I'm going to print this saying off and put it up somewhere as a constant reminder. Actually I may steal it and blog about it.......eventually.....
I've been trying to change up my use of time too. Jake will approach me with a smile and say "hey mom, lets have a PILLOW fight!" I always have time for that.
You are not the only one that says "in a minute, or I'm busy" I just remind myself that they are only little once & just love me and want to hang with me now.
My husband is away right now and the timing of your post is perfect. How come on an average day my kids get 'just a minute', right after I...' but when Dad's away i seem t find time to build a bull dozer for my youngest and reread entire novels with the older two all while ding all the cooking/cleaning/household stuff of two parents. It seem when my husband is away I put a little more effort in. I do unheard of things like clean the kitchen right after meals and set reasonable expectations for what I can manage during a day. This time, I'm going to try and stretch the effort a little farther. Who knows, with a little effort I may be able to ditch the procrastination habit and get on with being the mother I'd rather be.
